General
What is Casenta?
Casenta is a legal matter intelligence platform designed to help legal teams organise documents, identify issues and evidence, build a structured Case Map, interrogate the matter using AI, develop findings and maintain a current Matter Position.
Is Casenta a case-management system or an AI tool?
It combines both concepts. Casenta provides matter-management functions such as documents, people, deadlines, activity and team access, while adding an intelligence layer that structures the evidence and helps the legal team understand how the matter is developing.
Does Casenta replace a lawyer?
No. Casenta is designed to support professional judgment, not replace it.
The platform can analyse, organise and synthesise information, but the authorised legal professional controls what is accepted into the established Case Map and what is ultimately relied upon.
What types of matters can Casenta be used for?
Casenta is designed around evidence-heavy legal matters rather than a single narrow practice area. Its Issue, Proposition, Evidence, Findings and Matter Position structure can be applied wherever a legal team needs to understand competing facts, documents and positions.
Using Casenta
How do I start a new matter?
Create the matter from the Dashboard, enter the core identifying information and then begin uploading source material. You do not need to fully populate every field before beginning the evidence workflow.
What happens after I upload a document?
The normal workflow is:
Upload → Process → Analyse → Human Review → Case Map.
Processing prepares the document content for analysis. Analysis then proposes Issues, Propositions and Evidence for human review.
What is the Case Map?
The Case Map is the structured, evolving intelligence layer of the matter. It connects the reviewed issues, propositions, evidence and findings that the legal team has established through the Casenta workflow.
It should not be confused with a one-off AI summary. The Case Map develops as the matter develops.
What does “Needs Investigation” mean?
It means a reviewer considers the proposed material potentially relevant but is not ready to accept or reject it.
The item remains outside the established Case Map and is available from the Matter's Open Investigations section until a reviewer accepts it, rejects it or keeps it open.
Can I change the AI's wording before accepting something?
Yes. Human review is not simply an approve/reject mechanism. Reviewers can edit proposed material before accepting it into the Case Map.
What is Ask Lex?
Ask Lex lets an authorised user ask focused questions about the matter. Short, precise questions usually produce the most useful result — for example, “What evidence supports the extension-of-time position?” or “What remains unresolved on causation?”
What are Matter Findings?
Findings are higher-level conclusions or observations developed from the reviewed Case Map. They can be revisited as new evidence is accepted and the matter develops.
What is the Matter Position?
The Matter Position is a controlled synthesis of the current human-reviewed Case Map. It gives the legal team a concise view of the matter's present evidentiary position, including supporting, opposing and unresolved points.
What happens when new evidence changes the matter?
New documents can be processed and reviewed into the existing Case Map. Findings can then be refreshed and a new Matter Position snapshot generated.
Casenta is being designed to preserve earlier Matter Position snapshots so the team can see how the matter position developed rather than simply overwriting history.
AI & Accuracy
Can Casenta AI make mistakes?
Yes. Like any AI system, AI-assisted analysis can misunderstand, omit or incorrectly characterise information. Casenta is deliberately designed around that reality.
AI-generated Issues, Propositions and Evidence are proposals until an authorised human reviewer decides what should happen to them.
Does AI-generated material automatically become part of the case?
No.
The reviewer can Accept, edit and Accept, mark Needs Investigation, or Reject. This human-review boundary is a core Casenta safeguard.
The platform is designed to keep a clear distinction between machine-generated assistance and human-reviewed matter intelligence.
Should I rely on a Casenta answer without checking the source material?
No AI output should replace professional verification where accuracy is material. Casenta is intended to accelerate analysis and surface relationships, not remove the lawyer's responsibility to review important source material and exercise professional judgment.
Security & Privacy
Is my legal matter data private?
Casenta is designed so matter information is available only within authorised organisation and matter workflows, subject to user permissions.
Legal matter data is not intended to be public content or an advertising-data product.
How does Casenta protect confidential information?
Casenta uses layered controls designed for professional legal work, including:
- authenticated access;
- organisation separation;
- role-based permissions;
- matter assignment controls;
- AES-256-GCM application-level encryption at rest for uploaded source documents and extracted document segments;
- HMAC-based secure document indexing that supports targeted retrieval without storing indexed document text itself in plaintext;
- secure password hashing;
- request-validation controls;
- controlled invitations; and
- auditable human-review workflows.
See the Privacy & Security Policy for more information.
Are documents encrypted in Casenta?
Yes. Uploaded source documents and extracted document segments are protected using application-level AES-256-GCM encryption at rest.
Casenta also uses an HMAC-based secure search index for encrypted document segments. This allows the platform to locate relevant material for authorised workflows without storing the indexed document text itself in plaintext.
When an authorised workflow needs the underlying content, Casenta decrypts it as required for processing, review or retrieval. This is encryption at rest rather than end-to-end encryption, because Casenta must be able to process authorised content to provide its document intelligence and analysis functions.
Is Casenta GDPR compliant?
Casenta is designed to support GDPR data-protection principles where the GDPR applies, including purpose limitation, data minimisation, accuracy, storage limitation, confidentiality and accountability.
Formal compliance depends not only on software features but also on matters such as the organisation's role, processing purposes, contracts, subprocessors, hosting, retention practices and applicable jurisdictions. For that reason, Casenta does not reduce GDPR compliance to a simple software badge.
Is Casenta 100% secure?
No responsible internet service should promise that a system can never be compromised. Casenta instead uses security-by-design principles and layered safeguards intended to reduce risk and protect confidentiality, integrity and authorised access.
Does Casenta sell legal matter data?
Casenta is not designed around selling confidential legal matter data to advertisers, data brokers or unrelated third parties.

Teams & Access
Can multiple people work on the same Casenta account?
Yes. Casenta is structured around organisations and teams. Authorised users can be invited and assigned appropriate roles and matter access.
What team roles are available?
Roles can include Owner, Team Admin, Lawyer, Investigator, Staff/Paralegal and Viewer, with permissions controlled according to the organisation's configuration.
What happens when someone leaves the firm?
Their team access can be deactivated. This removes active access while preserving the integrity of historical matter and audit records. The organisation can then use the available account capacity for a replacement team member.
Can every team member see every matter?
Not necessarily. Casenta supports matter assignment so organisations can restrict access according to the user's role and involvement in the matter.
